CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies: The scope of the investigation into the alleged conversion case that surfaced at King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is continuing to widen. The Special Task Force (STF) probe has found information indicating that the case has links to medical colleges in Agra and Etah. According to the investigating agency, more than 100 doctors and maulanas are suspected to have been in contact with this network. However, the role of all of them has not yet been established.
The investigation has also brought up the name of Dr Rizwan Malik, said to be close to the main accused, Dr Rameezuddin alias Rameez. Rizwan had been posted at Etah Medical College for about five years. In addition, the contacts of former and current students of Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SNMC) in Agra are also being examined. The STF has received information about a group named “Islamic Medicos”. It is alleged that the group was used to increase contact among old and new students of medical colleges and that attempts were also made to connect newly admitted students with it.
Another allegation before the investigating agency is that about Rs 10 lakh was collected every month in the name of zakat. Religious sermons were allegedly organised in medical college hostels for this purpose. Maulanas coming from outside would contact doctors and students. The STF is now gathering information on the source of this money, bank accounts and transactions. Apart from Lucknow, the scope of the investigation has now reached Agra, Etah, Basti, Saharanpur and Bareilly.
The case also involves a probe into allegations of pressure, harassment and forcing women doctors to convert. The STF is examining the role of suspects on the basis of digital evidence, mutual contacts and financial transactions. Only after the officials complete the investigation will it become clear who was involved in this alleged network and what role each person played.
