The process of action has accelerated in the case linked to alleged conversion and harassment of women doctors at Lucknow’s King George Medical University (KGMU). After receiving the investigation report of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), the university administration has decided to form a six-member disciplinary action committee. The committee will examine the facts, documents and versions of the people concerned that have emerged in the report and recommend further action.
On Friday, November 6, a special meeting of the university’s Executive Council was held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand. The STF report was discussed in detail at the meeting. The state government had sent this report to the university administration on October 30. The Executive Council unanimously decided to constitute a disciplinary action committee.
Apart from the vice-chancellor and the registrar, the committee will include two senior teachers of the university and two independent members. Senior administrative officials will be included as independent members, with preference to retired senior IPS officers.
The committee will examine the allegations and findings recorded in the STF report and also consider objections submitted by the teachers and employees concerned. Some employees have claimed that their names were wrongly included in the report. The Executive Council has directed that these objections also be examined as per rules.
The STF investigation has brought out allegations of harassment of women doctors and employees, alleged pressure for religious conversion and suppression of complaints. Some arrests have already been made in the case. However, final action against those whose roles have been questioned in the report will be taken according to the committee’s inquiry and university rules.
