Lucknow. Amid protests by nursing students at King George’s Medical University, the university administration has warned of disciplinary action against students taking part in the agitation. The administration has sent letters to the parents of protesting students, asking them to keep their wards away from the agitation and to cooperate in maintaining order at the university.

The dispute at KGMU began after the death of Divyanshi Yadav, a second-year BSc Nursing student, from dengue. Students alleged that she faced several problems during her illness, including not being granted leave on time. The students have raised issues related to arrangements at the nursing college, hostels, health facilities and leave for students who are ill.

Students had earlier staged a sit-in and placed their demands before the administration. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sonia Nityanand spoke to the protesting students and assured them of appropriate action on their demands, after which the agitation was temporarily called off. Later, alleging that the expected action had not been taken on their demands, the students again stopped attending classes and resumed their sit-in.

The KGMU administration says action is being taken on the students’ legitimate demands and that they have been appealed to end the sit-in. To maintain discipline at the university, the administration has warned of action in the event of violation of rules. Talks between the students and the university administration are continuing over the matter.
