CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, intensifying the opposition’s criticism of the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. Kharge has also appealed to citizens to participate in the INDIA bloc’s proposed ‘Vote Bachao–Desh Bachao’ rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1, 2026.

Kharge accused the government of failing to ensure transparency in the electoral process and raised questions about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. He alleged that the exercise had raised concerns about voter deletions and the accessibility of information related to electoral roll management.

The Congress president also referred to information sought through the Right to Information (RTI) mechanism concerning the software used in the SIR process. According to reports, the Election Commission reportedly cited commercial confidentiality in its response. The issue has added to the opposition’s demand for greater transparency in voter registration procedures.

Kharge outlined several demands, including the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a review of the law governing the appointment and protection of election commissioners, and a halt to the SIR exercise until concerns over voter lists are addressed. The opposition has also advocated restoring names allegedly removed from electoral rolls without proper justification and introducing paper ballots for elections.

The Congress has presented the proposed rally as part of a broader campaign to protect democratic institutions and ensure electoral accountability. Opposition parties are expected to use the gathering to raise concerns about voter registration, election administration and constitutional safeguards.

The allegations remain contested and should be distinguished from established findings of electoral malpractice. The Election Commission’s procedures and the opposition’s demands are likely to remain central to the political debate ahead of the rally.

The proposed demonstration is expected to draw attention to the continuing disagreement between opposition parties and the Election Commission over electoral transparency and the revision of voter lists.
