CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp attack on the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the INDIA alliance’s ‘Save Vote, Save Country’ rally held at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday. He alleged that the electoral process in the country was being tampered with and that democratic institutions were being put under pressure. In his address, Kharge said this was a “stolen government” and that it would have to go. Calling for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be removed, he said opposition parties would have to fight unitedly to save democracy.
Kharge also questioned the role of the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the alleged vote theft issue. He demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged that the names of voters supporting the opposition were being removed from voter lists. He claimed serious questions had arisen over the electoral process in various states, including Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana and West Bengal.
The Congress president said that if citizens’ voting rights were not protected, the democratic system would be weakened. He appealed to opposition parties to remain united to protect the Constitution and voting rights.
Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Tejashwi Yadav and leaders of other opposition parties also attended the rally. The leaders raised their objections to the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR process.
At the same time, a different position has also emerged from the Election Commission and the ruling BJP on these allegations of electoral irregularities. The actual position can become clear only on the basis of independent verification of the opposition’s allegations and investigation of each case. Through the rally, the INDIA alliance registered its protest on the issues of electoral transparency and voter rights.
