Kim Jong Un’s sister rejects calls to give up nuclear weapons

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has rejected international demands to end the country’s nuclear weapons programme. In a statement issued on September 17, 2026, she said North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed country is “complete” and cannot be changed.

Kim Yo-jong described appeals by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Western countries for nuclear disarmament as mere “noise”. She said North Korea has the capability and will to take the steps necessary to protect the supreme interests of the country.

Her statement came during the IAEA’s 70th General Conference. At the conference, concern was expressed over North Korea’s growing nuclear capability, and Pyongyang was urged to dismantle its nuclear weapons programme completely, verifiably and irreversibly.

Kim Yo-jong has previously described North Korea’s nuclear programme as a permanent part of the country’s security policy. North Korea incorporated its status as a nuclear-armed nation into its constitution in 2023.
