CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bengali film actor and former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rukmini Mallick, popularly known as Koel Mallick, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, a day after the party named her as its candidate for the October 16 Rajya Sabha bypoll in West Bengal. Mallick joined the BJP in the presence of state party leaders and is scheduled to file her nomination for the Upper House seat. She had earlier been elected as a TMC Rajya Sabha member in April this year but resigned from the post on July 16 following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Speaking after joining the BJP, Mallick said she considered it an honour to get an opportunity to serve in Parliament and work for the welfare of people. She also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the opportunity. Mallick said she wanted to contribute to development initiatives in the state.

The West Bengal Rajya Sabha bypoll was necessitated by Mallick’s resignation. The Election Commission has scheduled the election for October 16. The BJP, which holds a majority in the West Bengal Assembly, has nominated Mallick to contest the vacant seat.
