CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Kolkata. Police have arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of a woman volunteer deployed at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. The accused police personnel is alleged to have behaved inappropriately with the woman. After receiving the complaint, police began an investigation and took the accused into custody before arresting him.
Action was taken on the woman’s complaint. According to available information, the incident took place during Durga Puja at a pandal where the woman volunteer was assisting with arrangements. It is alleged that the ASI sexually harassed her while on duty. The woman lodged a complaint regarding the incident, after which the police authorities concerned took action. Given the sensitivity of the matter, police are investigating on the basis of the complaint and available evidence. Following the arrest of the accused, the facts and circumstances related to the incident, as well as statements of possible witnesses, may be examined.
The incident has raised questions over security arrangements at Puja events. During Durga Puja, large numbers of devotees visit pandals in Kolkata. At such events, the role of police and volunteers is important for crowd management, security and maintaining order. This incident has again underlined the need to ensure the safety of women volunteers deployed on duty and to act promptly on complaints.
Police are investigating the case, and the full position will become clear after the probe. An arrest in itself is not proof that the allegations have been established. The veracity of the allegations against the accused will be determined on the basis of the investigation and judicial process. For now, further police action and the findings of the investigation are being watched.
