CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On October 6, 2025, a dramatic incident unfolded in India’s Supreme Court when 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a court session. The act was reportedly a protest against CJI Gavai’s remarks on the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh, which Kishore perceived as disrespectful to “Sanatan Dharma.”

Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained unflustered, stating, “These things do not affect me,” and continued with the proceedings. Security personnel swiftly intervened, and Kishore was escorted out of the courtroom.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) immediately suspended Kishore’s license to practice law, deeming his conduct “inconsistent with the dignity” of the legal profession. Kishore later defended his actions, expressing no remorse and attributing his outburst to emotional distress over the CJI’s comments.

This incident has sparked widespread condemnation within the legal community and raised concerns about courtroom decorum and the limits of protest within judicial settings.
