CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A specialist lecture on the topic “Overview of Antiepileptic Drugs” was organized at LNCT University for B.Pharm second-semester students. The lecture was delivered by Pradeep Kumar Mohanti, Faculty, School of Pharmacy.
The program commenced with a welcome address by A.K. Singhai, Director of the School of Pharmacy and Dean Academics. In his address, he emphasized the need to understand the critical role of antiepileptic drugs in the effective management of epilepsy.
During the lecture, Mohanti provided a detailed introduction to epilepsy, explaining that it is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures caused by sudden, excessive, and abnormal electrical activity in the brain. He elaborated that the condition arises due to an imbalance between excitatory neurotransmitters (such as glutamate) and inhibitory neurotransmitters.
The classification of epilepsy was also explained in detail, including focal (partial) and generalized seizures. Among generalized seizures, the lecture specifically discussed tonic-clonic, absence, myoclonic, and atonic seizures.
Furthermore, Mohanti highlighted the mechanism of action of commonly used antiepileptic drugs such as Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Sodium Valproate, Ethosuximide, and Levetiracetam. He also pointed out important contraindications, including avoiding valproate during pregnancy or in liver disease, avoiding carbamazepine in cases of bone marrow depression, and refraining from using benzodiazepines in severe respiratory depression.
