CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: Left parties form human chain in Delhi, demand SIR cancellation
New Delhi. In the national capital Delhi, Left parties staged a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process by forming a human chain. The protesters demanded that the SIR be cancelled and sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising questions over the fairness of the electoral process.
Leaders and workers who joined the protest alleged that voters could face difficulties during the special intensive revision of the electoral roll. They demanded that the process of preparing the voter list be transparent and that the name of no eligible citizen be removed from the list. The protesters also stressed the need to ensure protection of citizens’ voting rights in the electoral process.
The Left parties said revision of the voter list is an important part of the democratic system, but it should be carried out under fair and clear rules. They alleged that the Election Commission should address the concerns being raised over the process. The protesters questioned the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanded his resignation. However, these demands reflect the political position and allegations of the protesting parties. Independent verification of these allegations and the Election Commission’s position need to be seen separately.
SIR, or Special Intensive Revision, is aimed at detailed verification and updating of the voter list. Differences among political parties over this process have surfaced from time to time. In such a situation, along with maintaining the accuracy of the voter list, protecting the rights of eligible voters is also important. After the protest, attention will now remain on the Election Commission’s response to the issue and the next steps of political parties.
