CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India E-Press / ITDC News Bhopal:
A special lecture on euthanasia and modern law was organized at the Bhopal School of Legal Studies, LNCT University. The program began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and Saraswati Vandana.
The event featured Nitesh Chaubey as the chief guest and subject expert, while Ajita Mishra attended as the invited guest. The program was chaired by Prof. Mukesh Kumar Sahu, Dean and Director of the School of Legal Studies at LNCT University.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mukesh Kumar Sahu explained that the Supreme Court of India, in the Harish Rana case, has granted legal recognition to passive euthanasia under prescribed guidelines. He stated that Article 21—the right to life—also includes the right to die with dignity, under which terminally ill patients may be withdrawn from life-support systems.
In his lecture, Nitesh Chaubey explained that a mentally competent adult can create a living will (advance directive), specifying the withdrawal of treatment in case of an incurable illness. He further noted that if a patient is in a coma, hospitals are required to constitute two medical boards, and the final decision may require supervision by the High Court.
The program was also attended by Prof. Ajit Soni (Registrar, LNCT University) and Vivek Shrivastava (Principal, LN Paramedical College). Karan Tiwari and Snigdha Saraiya played a key role in organizing the event.
On the successful completion of the program, Anupam Chouksey (Group Secretary, LNCT), Dharmendra Gupta (Executive Director), and N.K. Thapak (Vice Chancellor, LNCT University), along with others, extended their congratulations.
