CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Long working hours may increase the risk of heart attack

Working continuously for long hours is not limited to increasing fatigue and stress; it can also affect heart health. According to a joint analysis by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), people working 55 hours or more a week were found to have about a 17 percent higher risk of death from ischemic heart disease, while the risk of stroke was about 35 percent higher compared with those working 35-40 hours.

Long working hours do not give the body enough time for rest and recovery. Conditions such as stress, lack of sleep and reduced physical activity caused by continuous work can also increase cardiovascular risks. According to WHO estimates, in 2016, about 7.45 lakh deaths occurred due to stroke and ischemic heart disease linked to long working hours.

Experts say it is important to maintain a balance between work and rest. Regular sleep, physical activity, a balanced diet and controlling stress are important for heart health. If long working hours are unavoidable, taking breaks in between and getting adequate rest are also necessary. If symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden sweating or dizziness appear, medical help should be sought immediately.
