Chennai. Popular south Indian cinema actor Dhanush is in the news these days not only for his films but also over talk of a possible political innings. At an event held with women fans in Chennai, he presented them silver Kamakshi lamps. After a lotus mark was seen on the lamps, speculation intensified in political circles over his possible association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, Dhanush has not yet made any official announcement about entering politics or joining any political party.
The event with women fans was held on Sunday at a private college in Semmancheri, Chennai, and was attended by women office-bearers and members of Dhanush’s fan organisation. Women who came from different districts met the actor and took photographs with him. According to media reports, around 3,000 to 5,000 women were estimated to be present at the programme. Dhanush gifted silver Kamakshi lamps to everyone and also extended Deepavali greetings.
Why was the BJP’s name linked to the lotus mark? The lotus mark on the lamps began to be viewed in connection with the BJP’s election symbol. This led to discussions on social media and in political circles about Dhanush’s possible political stance. However, an office-bearer associated with Dhanush’s organisation clarified that the lotus on the lamp is the manufacturer’s mark and has no connection with any political party. The organisation has also rejected speculation about any kind of alliance with other political parties.
The new form of the fan club has added to the discussion. Dhanush’s fan organisation was earlier named ‘Dhanush Narpani Mandram’, which has been changed to ‘Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam’. The organisational change and activities to strengthen the network in various districts are also being linked to his possible political ambitions. However, expansion of the organisation by itself does not confirm the formation of a political party.
Dhanush did not give a clear answer on politics. During the programme, he met fans, posed for photographs and, in a brief address, extended Deepavali greetings. When he was asked about entering politics, he made no clear announcement. For now, the situation regarding his political plans is not clear.
In Tamil Nadu, film stars joining politics is nothing new. In this context, Dhanush’s growing organisational activities are being watched. But until the actor himself makes an announcement, the ongoing discussion about his political entry should be viewed only as speculation.
