CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Police are examining several aspects, including personal relationships, in the death of para athlete Neeraj Yadav, who had won gold medals three times at the Asian Para Games. During the investigation, a statement by a woman friend has come to light. According to it, she had gone to meet Neeraj in Sonipat, Haryana, on October 27 and told him that she did not want to remain in contact with him further. Neeraj then came to drop her near Maujpur Metro Station in Delhi. Some time later, the woman saw him lying unconscious on the road near his car and took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to police, the woman said she had been friends with Neeraj since December 2025. Following this sequence of events, police are also looking at strain in personal relations as one possible aspect of the investigation. However, it has not yet been confirmed that distance in his relationship with the woman friend had any direct link to his death.
Neeraj Yadav’s sporting career had also been seriously affected in recent years. He was facing a four-year doping ban in a case involving a prohibited substance. As a result, he had to forfeit the two gold medals he won at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games and could not take part in the recently held Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games. Because of the case, he was also deprived of possible prize money and government job opportunities.
The 42-year-old Neeraj had won a gold medal in javelin throw at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Para Games. In 2023, he also won gold medals in javelin throw and discus throw. He ran an online sports academy in Sonipat, Haryana. He is survived by his wife and three-year-old daughter.
At present, the actual cause of his death is not known. Police have started an investigation in the case, and the circumstances are being ascertained on the basis of the post-mortem and other reports. It would be premature at this stage to treat strain in personal relations or the doping ban as a definite cause of death.
