CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Network – ITDC India ePress / ITDC News, Bhopal/Brasilia. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has expressed anger over reports of Flavio Bolsonaro leaving the country after his defeat in the presidential election. Meanwhile, a senior US State Department official said the United States will issue visas for entry to Flavio Bolsonaro and his family. The development is expected to increase the already continuing political tension between Brazil and the United States.

Lula calls it a shameful step

On October 27, Lula described Flavio’s departure from the country as shameful. He said that if a person has done nothing wrong, he should face the legal process instead of leaving the country. According to Lula, Flavio should have deposited his passports and cooperated with the investigation.

Case over order to deposit passports

Flavio Bolsonaro had been ordered by Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes to deposit his passports. The order was issued amid an investigation linked to alleged money laundering. Flavio and his associate have denied the allegations. After the prescribed deadline passed, officials said his passports had been cancelled. According to reports, news emerged that Flavio had reached the United States, but his exact location could not be independently confirmed in the initial stage.

Focus on Trump administration’s decision

According to a senior US State Department official, visas will be issued to Flavio and his family. However, the official did not clarify whether all members of the family have already reached the United States or are in the process of travelling. US President Donald Trump has had political ties with Flavio’s family, while Lula has previously expressed concern over US interference in Brazilian elections.

Controversy grows after election defeat

Lula defeated Flavio Bolsonaro in the presidential election held on October 25. Flavio questioned the election results, while his party later accepted Lula’s victory. After the passport dispute and the US visa-related announcement, diplomatic relations between the two countries are now also being watched.
