CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lula’s victory in Brazil disputed, Flavio seeks order to cancel election
The political controversy has deepened after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in Brazil’s presidential election. Right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has refused to accept the election result and said he will take legal action to get the voting annulled. Flavio is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
According to official results, in the second round of voting held on October 25, 2026, Lula received about 51.8 percent of the vote and Flavio 48.2 percent. The margin between the two was about 4.4 million votes. Despite this, Flavio has raised questions over the electoral process.
What is the reason for the dispute?
The main issue in the dispute is the decision to extend voting time by two hours. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin had directed that voting be extended until 7 p.m. in some cities after complaints that voters were facing transport-related difficulties. Election officials later clarified that votes cast at polling stations where voting had already ended would also be counted.
Calling the decision unfair, Flavio said voters in different cities and states were not treated equally. He announced that he would seek help from his legal team to have the election result annulled. However, the demand to extend voting time had also been made in some areas by Flavio’s election camp.
Questions were also raised over transport arrangements. Lula’s party had alleged that voters faced difficulty reaching polling stations in some cities because of a lack of public transport. After these complaints, the decision was taken to extend the voting period. On the other hand, Flavio has questioned the legality and fairness of the decision.
What happens next?
After Flavio’s announcement, the matter may move towards a legal challenge. However, the demand to cancel the election is not in itself proof that the result will be annulled. The situation ahead will depend on the actions of the relevant election authorities and courts. For now, after Lula’s victory, debate has intensified in Brazil over the electoral process and political differences.
