CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Governor Inaugurates Genetic Lab and DNA Sequencer at BMHRC, Bhopal; Launches Seminar on Sickle Cell Anemia
Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel inaugurated a state-of-the-art Genetic Analysis Laboratory and DNA Sequencer Machine at the Sickle Cell Anemia Competency Center in Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC). The Governor also launched a seminar on “Genetic Analysis and Integrated Approach in Managing Sickle Cell Anemia” and interacted with children suffering from the disease.
Prominent attendees included Tribal Affairs Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, NHM Director Saloni Sidana, Dr. Manisha Madkaikar from ICMR-NIIH Mumbai, and BMHRC Director Manisha Srivastava. ICMR Director General Dr. Rajeev Bahl joined virtually. Several patients and their families were present as well.
During the program, the Governor released a guidebook titled “Sickle Cell Disease: Awareness, Prevention, and Care” and distributed health kits and nutrition supplies to patients. He emphasized the national goal set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to eliminate sickle cell disease by 2047, stressing the role of diagnosis, medication, and awareness in achieving this target.
Dr. Bahl noted BMHRC’s emergence as a key center for sickle cell screening, diagnosis, and research in Central India, having already tested over 800 tribal students. NHM Director Saloni Sidana highlighted the growing awareness in tribal districts like Dindori, Jhabua, and Alirajpur where people now check sickle cell status before marriage.
Dr. Manisha Srivastava reaffirmed BMHRC’s commitment to the “Sickle Cell-Free India” vision, stating that the institute will continue to play a leading role in eliminating this genetic disorder.
