CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Madras High Court Orders Numbering of Three Dhoni Defamation Pleas
Chennai: A fresh legal turn has emerged in the ₹100 crore defamation case linked to former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni. The Madras High Court has directed that three new applications filed by retired IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar be numbered. The case relates to the 2013 IPL betting controversy, after Dhoni filed a defamation suit when his name was allegedly linked to the matter.
What are the three new demands?
Sampath Kumar has mainly raised objections and demands before the court over the process of recording Dhoni’s testimony. The focus of the applications is on where and how Dhoni’s statement should be recorded.
One of the former IPS officer’s key demands is that Dhoni’s testimony should be video-recorded in the court premises or in a government building, instead of at a private location or a luxury hotel. He has argued that this would be appropriate to maintain transparency and fairness in judicial proceedings.
Objection to recording testimony in a hotel
Special arrangements for recording Dhoni’s testimony had already been discussed in the case. Sampath Kumar has objected to the possibility of the testimony being recorded on private property, particularly in a hotel. He has said that recording the proceedings in a court or government premises would better preserve the credibility and transparency of the process.
What is the full case?
Dhoni filed a ₹100 crore defamation suit in 2014 against Sampath Kumar and some media organisations. He alleged that his reputation was damaged by linking him to the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing controversy. In the long-pending case, the Madras High Court has now taken steps to move the trial process forward.
In September 2026, the High Court directed that the three applications filed by Sampath Kumar be numbered. After further hearings on these applications, the court will decide how and where Dhoni’s testimony will be recorded. For now, the court has not given a final decision on these demands.
