CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / :Political activity in Maharashtra has intensified ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. On Tuesday, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) demanded that the elections be conducted using ballot papers, aligning itself with the opposition’s stance. A delegation of MNS leaders met the State Election Commissioner and submitted a list of their demands.
Senior party leader Bala Nandgaonkar, who was part of the delegation, said that public perception is growing that democracy is under threat. To restore transparency and trust, it is essential to hold elections via ballot paper, he asserted.
The MNS list also included a demand to ensure the use of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail). VVPAT technology provides a paper slip to voters casting their ballot via Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), thus enhancing transparency in the electoral process.
Municipal election dates in the state are expected to be announced soon. The opposition has been consistently questioning the reliability of EVMs, and MNS’s stand could further increase pressure on the Election Commission.
