CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has indicated that the state government’s planned farm loan waiver is expected to be implemented before June 30 and is unlikely to be impacted by the model code of conduct for the upcoming MLC elections. The announcement has brought renewed attention to the long-standing issue of agricultural distress and farmer debt in the state.
The Chief Minister clarified that administrative processes related to the waiver are already underway and that efforts are being made to ensure timely execution without procedural delays. He also emphasized that the government is committed to providing relief to eligible farmers who are struggling with rising input costs, unpredictable weather patterns, and fluctuating market prices for crops.
The proposed loan waiver is seen as a significant political and economic move, especially in the context of Maharashtra’s agrarian population. Farmer organizations have welcomed the announcement but continue to demand clarity on eligibility criteria, coverage limits, and implementation timelines.
Opposition parties, meanwhile, have questioned the timing of the decision, linking it to electoral considerations ahead of the MLC polls. However, the state government maintains that the waiver is part of its broader agricultural support policy rather than a poll-driven measure.
The final notification and operational details are expected to be released soon, with district-level machinery being prepared for rollout once formal approvals are completed.
