CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Maharashtra has joined hands with Finland to modernise Mumbai’s historic Sassoon Dock, one of the city’s oldest and busiest fishing harbours. The initiative, announced by Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane, aims to introduce technology-driven solutions to improve operations, hygiene, and sustainability at the facility.

Built in the 19th century, Sassoon Dock has long been a vital hub for Mumbai’s fishing industry but now struggles with overcapacity, unhygienic conditions, odour, and safety concerns. To address these challenges, Finnish companies will contribute expertise in environmental management, digital surveillance, lighting automation, and reducing plastic pollution.

The partnership was formalised during a meeting between Rane and Finland’s Consul General Erik af Hällström, along with Deputy Consul General Eva Nilsson and representatives from Finnish firms such as Lamor Corporation, Mirasys India, Helios Lighting Solutions, and RiverRecycle. These companies will collaborate with Maharashtra’s Fisheries Department to create a world-class model harbour.

The modernization plan includes modular infrastructure upgrades, better fish-handling standards, and sustainable waste management practices. Authorities believe these changes will not only improve working conditions for fishermen but also enhance Mumbai’s seafood trade prospects in global markets.

Sassoon Dock, a landmark in south Mumbai, is also significant from a cultural and heritage perspective. The project is expected to balance heritage conservation with modern infrastructure, turning the dock into a sustainable and efficient maritime hub.

This Indo-Finnish collaboration highlights how international partnerships can drive innovation in urban infrastructure and fisheries management.
