CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Maharashtra government adopted a non-confrontational approach during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2, with officials saying the strategy was intended to prevent the demonstration from escalating. According to The Times of India, the gathering drew around 9,000 to 10,000 people by the afternoon, despite authorities having denied permission for the protest at Shivaji Park.

Protesters gathered on an adjoining road and raised demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Mumbai Police deployed around 1,000 to 1,500 personnel, including reserve staff, to manage the crowd and maintain public order. Police prevented protesters from entering the Shivaji Park ground but allowed the gathering to continue on the nearby road.

A senior Maharashtra minister told TOI that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had given the police freedom to handle the situation while ensuring that a democratic protest remained peaceful. BJP minister Ashish Shelar criticised the CJP agitation, while the state administration did not use force to disperse the protesters. Police officials said roads around the area were cleared and designated as no-parking zones to minimise inconvenience to residents. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke publicly praised the Mumbai Police for handling the demonstration peacefully.
