CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced that the state government will set up a corpus fund to support medical treatments costing more than ₹5 lakh. The decision aims to provide relief to economically weaker sections of society who struggle to bear the expenses of high-end medical procedures.

Fadnavis said the fund will be designed to cover treatments that are not included in existing health schemes like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and Ayushman Bharat. “Many families are pushed into financial distress when faced with expensive medical bills. With this corpus fund, no patient in Maharashtra should be denied advanced healthcare because of money,” he added.

The government is expected to collaborate with both private and public hospitals for the implementation of this initiative. According to officials, a detailed policy framework will soon be prepared to identify eligible patients, empanel hospitals, and ensure timely disbursement of funds.

Healthcare experts have welcomed the move, saying it could bridge a major gap in access to critical medical care. Treatments such as organ transplants, advanced cancer therapies, and specialized surgeries often cost several lakhs of rupees, leaving middle-class and poor families vulnerable.

The fund is expected to be operational in the coming months after necessary approvals and budgetary allocations. Citizens and social activists have also urged the government to maintain transparency and streamline the application process so that the scheme benefits the maximum number of patients.
