CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / Mumbai : In light of the rising number of fatalities due to overcrowding in Mumbai’s suburban rail network, the Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a special task force to explore solutions — including the possibility of staggered office hours for private firms.
The announcement came days after a tragic incident on June 9, when five commuters lost their lives after falling from overcrowded local trains between Mumbra and Diva stations. Addressing the state assembly on Wednesday, State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik revealed that the government is taking the issue seriously and has initiated proactive steps.
The proposed task force will consist of senior officials from the state government, Indian Railways, and key representatives from private sector companies operating in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The goal is to examine the feasibility of shifting work start and end times to reduce congestion during peak hours.
“The safety of Mumbai’s commuters is non-negotiable,” said Sarnaik. “We are committed to finding practical and lasting solutions to prevent such tragedies from recurring.”
Mumbai’s suburban rail system, often described as the city’s lifeline, carries over 7 million passengers daily — many of whom travel in dangerously overcrowded conditions during rush hours. The introduction of staggered work hours, combined with other long-term infrastructure improvements, could significantly ease the burden on the network.
The task force is expected to submit its initial recommendations within the next two months.
