CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal  / Maharashtra  :The Maharashtra government has withdrawn its decision to implement a 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in private medical colleges, citing the need for the Central government or respective councils to increase the total number of seats. The State Medical Education & Drugs Department stated in a notification dated July 30, 2025, that EWS reservation would be enforced only if additional seats are created to avoid affecting existing reservation categories.

This move comes in response to growing opposition from medical aspirants, parents, and private college associations. The CET Cell had earlier announced the 10% EWS quota in its NEET UG 2025 information brochure, triggering backlash over potential reduction in seats for other reserved categories.

Dileep Sardesai, Commissioner of the State CET Cell, clarified that for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, and BUMS courses, the 10% EWS reservation would not apply unless the total seat capacity is expanded. For other health-related programs, the reservation will continue as per available seats.

Private medical institutions also expressed concern and formally opposed the decision through a letter to Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif. The government’s withdrawal is being seen as a pragmatic response to the controversy and practical seat constraints in private institutions.
