CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Majrooh Sultanpuri is among the lyricists of Hindi cinema who wrote memorable songs for several generations. His real name was Asrar ul Hasan Khan. Along with film songs, he also established a distinct identity in Urdu poetry. Songs written by him, including “Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega”, “Pehla Nasha” and many others, remain popular even today.
Majrooh’s life was not limited to songwriting. In 1949, during a workers’ movement, he recited a sharp poem criticising the policies of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. According to reports, after this poem, he was jailed for two years in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. He was also asked to apologise, but he reportedly refused to do so. Actor Balraj Sahni is also said to have been sent to jail along with him.
In his film career, Majrooh began with “Shahjahan” and later wrote songs for films such as “Andaz”, “CID”, “Guide” and “Jewel Thief”. Over time, he also adapted his writing to suit new generations. “Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega” from Aamir Khan’s film “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” and “Pehla Nasha” from “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar” are examples of this. Majrooh Sultanpuri was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. He died on May 24, 2000, but his poetry and film songs remain part of the legacy of Indian cinema.
