The qualities of Shri Ram should also be reflected in a teacher.” State Information Commissioner and noted educationist Umashankar Pachauri expressed these views in a monthly lecture series for teachers organised by Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (MCU).
Speaking on the theme “Man Mein Virajo Ram” (“Ram Resides in the Mind”), Pachauri referred to lines by Goswami Tulsidas and said Shri Ram has four key attributes: navkanj lochan, kanj mukh, kar kanj and pad kanjarunam – lotus-like eyes, lotus face, lotus hands and reddish lotus feet. If a teacher resolves to establish Ram in the mind, then the teacher’s vision, speech, actions and conduct all become lotus-like and pure, he said.
Underlining the role of teachers, Pachauri said a teacher’s vision should be like that of Shri Ram, which sees everything but remains completely detached. “Remember, the nature of one’s vision shapes the nature of one’s world. Along with this, a teacher’s speech should always be proper and balanced,” he said.
Discussing the sense of responsibility, he said a person should be free from the ego of “doership”. We should consider ourselves only as instruments and discharge our responsibilities, he said. To make this creation of God more enriched through the grace of the Almighty is the true “Ramkaj”, or work of Ram. He cautioned that if the mind is not free from desires and cravings, then no matter how much external purification is done, Ram cannot reside within.
Referring to the upcoming festival, Pachauri said Diwali is not limited to external light. Lighting lamps outside is important, but lighting a lamp within the inner self is most essential. Diwali is a sacred occasion to light the lamp of knowledge and goodwill within the mind and to express joy and happiness. Professors, officials and teachers of the university were present at the lecture.
