CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The troubles of West Bengal’s former chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee appear to be increasing. Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against Mamata Banerjee and the organisers of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day programme held on August 28 over the alleged violation of Calcutta High Court directions. The case has been registered at Hastings police station.
According to the police complaint, the High Court had laid down certain conditions for the programme held on Cathedral Road in Kolkata. It is alleged that during the event, a portion of the road that had been directed to be kept open for traffic was also occupied. This affected traffic movement on the road. Police have also alleged that the programme continued even after the permitted time limit had ended.
The complaint further alleges that some supporters present at the programme removed barricades put up by police and allegedly jostled with police personnel. According to police, the case has been registered on the basis of these incidents and the alleged violation of court directions.
Police said sections 61(2), 223, 125(A), 132 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been invoked in the case registered at Hastings police station. Along with Mamata Banerjee, organisers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad programme have also been named as accused. Police are now investigating the matter and examining the role of those concerned.
The development comes at a time when political activity in West Bengal is intense. At the August 28 programme, Mamata Banerjee had appealed to her supporters not to bow before political pressure and to stand firmly with the party. She had claimed that the Trinamool Congress would return to power again in the future.
After the FIR was registered, the matter also took on a political colour. For now, the police investigation is focused on determining the extent to which the High Court’s directions were violated and what role those who participated in the programme had in it. Further action will be decided on the basis of the findings of the investigation.
