CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid the continuing dispute in West Bengal over the Trinamool Congress name and election symbol, the Mamata Banerjee faction has submitted its response to the Election Commission. Following the Election Commission’s interim order, the Mamata camp placed before the commission, within the stipulated deadline, its options for alternative names and election symbols for the party.
In an interim order issued on Thursday, the Election Commission had barred Mamata Banerjee and the other faction from using the name “All India Trinamool Congress” and the reserved “flowers and grass” election symbol for the upcoming bypolls. The commission had asked both sides to submit three alternative names each and a preference list of free election symbols.
According to the commission, two rival factions have emerged within the party, and both are staking claim to the Trinamool Congress. Until a final decision is taken, both factions will have to contest the bypolls under separate names and election symbols.
The Mamata faction has objected to the commission’s interim order and said it does not accept it. The commission, however, says the arrangement has been put in place to provide equal opportunity to both sides until a final decision is reached.
