CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Around 30 students from the Department of Architecture and Planning at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, along with Professor Jagdish Singh, conducted a Heritage Impact Assessment study of the development activities around the historic Rani Kamalapati Palace in Bhopal. The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of surrounding construction and urban development on this historic palace and to explore measures for its future conservation.
The Rani Kamalapati Palace was built by Rani Kamalapati, the wife of Gond ruler Nizam Shah. The palace is located on the historic embankment of Bhojpal near Bhopal’s Upper Lake, originally constructed by Raja Bhoj. This two-story palace is renowned for its unique architecture. Its distinctive features include the use of lakhori bricks, beautiful arches, intricately carved pillars, lotus-petal-shaped jharokhas, and attractive chhajjas. The architectural style of the palace reflects a beautiful blend of Gondwana, Malwa, and Mughal-Rajput styles.
During the study, students observed and analyzed urban development around the palace, traffic, tourism activities, the lakeside environment, and the visual landscape of the monument. The study revealed that Rani Kamalapati Palace is one of Bhopal’s most important historical heritage sites and a significant part of the city’s cultural identity.
Students suggested that future development around the palace should follow sensitive and balanced planning with heritage conservation in mind, ensuring that the beauty, significance, and identity of this historic monument are preserved. Rani Kamalapati Palace is a nationally protected monument, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, and remains one of Bhopal’s key tourist and historical attractions today.
The study conducted by MANIT students is being considered an important initiative toward responsible urban planning and heritage preservation while accommodating the city’s ongoing development.
