CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The former PM had been unwell for a long time. He was rushed to Delhi AIIMS at 8:06 PM after collapsing at home.
According to the hospital bulletin, he was admitted to the emergency ward, where he breathed his last at 9:51 PM. His funeral will be conducted with full state honors.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India’s 14th Prime Minister in 2004 and completed two terms in office until May 2014. He was the country’s first Sikh Prime Minister and the fourth longest-serving PM.
Following his demise, the central government has declared a seven-day national mourning. A cabinet meeting has been scheduled for 11 AM today, and all events scheduled for Friday have been canceled.
Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge arrived in Delhi from Belagavi late at night and went directly to Dr. Singh’s residence. Rahul posted on X, “I have lost my mentor and guide.”
Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka, has been canceled. Events related to Congress Foundation Day have also been postponed. Party programs will resume after January 3.
Dr. Singh’s mortal remains will be placed at the Congress headquarters tomorrow for the public to pay their respects. The cremation will take place near Rajghat.
Congress Headquarters to Host Last Respects
According to Congress sources, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s body will be brought to the Congress headquarters on December 28, where the public can offer their tributes. His cremation will be held near Rajghat.
PM Modi and Kharge Express Condolences
PM Modi said, “He worked to improve the lives of people.” Congress President Kharge remarked, “He worked silently rather than speaking much.”
