CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Marriage and motherhood continue to influence women’s participation in the workforce, with social expectations, caregiving responsibilities and limited workplace flexibility creating significant challenges for many women. While India has witnessed greater female participation in education and professional sectors, the transition from marriage to motherhood can still become a turning point in women’s careers.
For many women, household responsibilities increase substantially after marriage, while childcare and family care often become their primary responsibility after having children. The lack of affordable childcare, flexible working arrangements and adequate support systems can make it difficult to continue full-time employment.
Career interruptions can also affect women’s income, professional growth and long-term financial independence. Women who leave the workforce for family responsibilities may face difficulties returning to employment, including skill gaps, fewer opportunities and lower wages.
Experts and policymakers increasingly emphasize the need for stronger workplace policies, accessible childcare facilities, parental support and greater sharing of household responsibilities between men and women. Creating supportive work environments could help women remain economically active while balancing family responsibilities.
The issue is not simply about women choosing between careers and families. It highlights the need for social and workplace structures that allow women to pursue both without having to sacrifice one for the other.
