CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra said that incidents are often not as they appear. On investigation, a very different truth sometimes emerges. Writing based on emotions instead of objectivity can worsen situations. He was addressing a masterclass on “Media and Police” organized by the Department of Mass Communication at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (MCU), Bhopal.

On this occasion, University Vice-Chancellor Vijay Manohar Tiwari, Registrar P. Shashikala, and Head of Department Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi were also present.

Mr. Mishra said that technology has changed the nature of crime, and geographical boundaries have also collapsed. In such a scenario, it is necessary to regulate the flow of information. He emphasized that if incidents are not viewed rationally, the direction of investigation changes. This is where the media plays a vital role in creating public awareness.

He added that crimes are often glamorized in media coverage, which poses a threat of spreading wrong practices in society. It has been observed that sensationalizing suicide news leads to an increase in such cases. According to him, the benchmarks of media reporting must be public interest and national interest.

He further said that due to the active role of the media, many laws have been amended and some made stricter. Several cases have also been exposed under media pressure.

Vice-Chancellor Vijay Manohar Tiwari stated that continuous migration from villages to cities has increased pressure on the police. He remarked that journalism students carry a dual responsibility — to become good citizens as well as good journalists. While reporting on issues of national security, journalists must carefully consider what to publish and what not to.
