Hundreds and thousands of people are present there, and in such a crowd it is very difficult to identify anyone easily. At these busy railway stations, helpless people and criminals may be present at the same time. In such a situation, identifying those in need and providing immediate help to them is a major responsibility of the railway police.
Rail passengers aim to reach their destinations safely, but it is often seen that many people present at railway stations are not travelling anywhere. For many reasons, they remain at stations. Operation Humdard is an experiment in proactive policing by the Madhya Pradesh Government Railway Police to help such people. The Madhya Pradesh Government Railway Police prepared a digital dossier of such people at 548 railway stations across the state. Their records were entered in it. These included people who had left home after disputes, as well as those who had left their homes due to various social reasons. Under Operation Humdard, the Madhya Pradesh GRP reunited such people with their families.
Special Director General of Police, Rail, Rajababu Singh made these remarks during an interaction with students on Operation Humdard at MCU’s Ganesh Shankar auditorium. He discussed in detail the changes in policing in India, from liberalisation to artificial intelligence. Speaking on various aspects of journalism, Singh said this is the era of citizen journalism. Journalism creates narratives and also shapes public opinion, making the ethical responsibility of journalists the greatest.
He said Operation Humdard was also an experiment to move away from the colonial-era image of policing. The effort to communicate with helpless and vulnerable people, provide them assistance and reunite them with their families has been quite successful. Rajababu said every person’s life has its own story, and the Government Railway Police took a new initiative under Operation Humdard to understand the stories of countless helpless people present in railway premises.
He told the students that journalism students must have high ethical values. During the question-answer interaction, while explaining the railway police system, Rajababu said that in the case of a person who has no identity and is unable to speak or understand, digital evidence such as CCTV camera footage is examined and events are connected to reunite the person with family members.
On the occasion, university Vice-Chancellor Vijay Manohar Tiwari said public-friendly innovations by the police present a different face of policing. He said Operation Humdard establishes the humane image of policing in society. University Registrar Professor P. Shashikala proposed the vote of thanks to the guests. Students, teachers and officials from all departments of the university were present at the programme.
