CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) successfully treated a highly rare medical case. A 57-year-old male patient had accidentally swallowed a medicine along with its aluminium wrapper about a month ago, which got stuck in the lower part of his food pipe (esophagus). As a result, he was facing severe difficulty in swallowing food and water.
Upon arriving at BMHRC, doctors advised an endoscopy. During the examination, it was discovered that a 1-centimeter-long medicine wrapper was lodged in the lower part of the food pipe. Assistant Professor Dr. Vishal Patil and his team from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery carefully removed the wrapper through endoscopy.
Dr. Patil explained that the sharp edges of the wrapper had caused multiple injuries to the inner lining of the esophagus. If it had not been removed in time, there was a high risk of the food pipe rupturing, which could have been life-threatening for the patient.
He further stated that while cases involving children swallowing coins or toys, and adults accidentally swallowing teeth or bones, are occasionally seen, this case of swallowing an entire medicine wrapper is extremely rare and possibly the first of its kind. The patient has now completely recovered and is leading a normal life.
