CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev was disqualified after an unexpected incident in the China Open semi-final. In the match against Novak Djokovic, Medvedev’s shot struck the wall behind the court and rebounded, after which he hit it with a backhand towards the spectators. The ball hit a spectator seated in the front row in the eye. Djokovic was leading 7-5, 5-3 at the time.
After the incident, the spectator was taken out with the help of stadium staff. He was seen in pain, holding his left eye. Match officials spoke to Medvedev before removing him from the contest. As a result, he also lost the ranking points and prize money he had earned in the tournament.
Expressing regret over the incident, Medvedev said it was 100 percent an accident. He said the ball was coming back towards him and he hit it to stop it from going out of the court. He also expressed a desire to personally apologise to the spectator. Djokovic also supported Medvedev, saying he hoped the spectator had not been seriously injured. Djokovic himself was disqualified after a similar incident at the 2020 US Open. Djokovic will now face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the final.
