Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced plans to ban the burqa and niqab in schools. She said a proposal in this regard will soon be placed before the Council of Ministers. Along with this, the government is also planning to limit the number of foreign students in each class and make it mandatory for the parents of some foreign students to learn the Italian language.
Meloni gave details of these proposals on September 20 in Rome at an event of the youth wing of her party, Brothers of Italy. She said people coming to Italy should focus on learning the language, understanding the country’s culture and respecting its rules. She also linked the ban on covering the face in schools to gender equality.
Under the proposal, parents of foreign students whose children are facing serious integration-related difficulties in the school system may have to learn Italian. The government has not yet clarified the maximum class-wise limit for foreign students. At present, the announcement is at the proposal stage. After government approval, Parliament’s approval will also be necessary for it to become law.
According to reports, Italy already has some legal provisions regarding face-covering clothing, but a separately proposed ban on the burqa and niqab in schools would be a new step.
