CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India Epress / ITDC News / Agencies: A major accident occurred during a mermaid show at the Dada Mian Urs fair in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. Late on Monday night, the glass of a tank built for the show and filled with nearly 20,000 litres of water suddenly broke. As the tank burst with a loud noise, water and shards of glass fell towards the spectators. Fifteen people, including four children, were injured in the accident. Panic spread through the fair after the incident.
The accident took place in Khalidpur village under the Fakharpur police station area. Around 20 to 25 people were watching the mermaid show at the time. Children standing in front of the tank suffered injuries to their heads and faces from pieces of glass. The injured include Arsh (8), Burau (7), Ahad Khan (8) and Mohammad Sadiq (9). The young woman playing the role of the mermaid in the show was also injured.
All the injured were taken to the Community Health Centre in Fakharpur. Two seriously injured children were referred to a medical college for better treatment, while the others were discharged after first aid. According to eyewitnesses, a ticket of Rs 50 was being charged for the show. As soon as the tank broke, the force of the water and the glass pieces created a stampede-like situation among those present.
According to police, the organisers had taken permission only for the religious programme of the Urs, while the mermaid show and other entertainment activities were being run without administrative permission. An FIR has been registered against seven organisers in the case. Four accused have been arrested, while the search for the others is continuing. After the accident, the administration shut down all other fair activities except the religious programme.
