CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi could play his final international match for the national team on October 6, 2026. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has invited Messi for a farewell match, and he has accepted the invitation. The match will be played against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

AFA president Claudio Tapia said the October 6 match has been fixed to give Messi a dignified farewell as captain and key player of the national team. Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso will also be part of this match along with Messi.

Before that, Argentina will play Bolivia in Córdoba on September 30 and Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on October 3. Instead of these matches, Messi will be included specifically in the farewell programme for the October 6 match against Benin. Messi announced his retirement from international football in August 2026. The October 6 match is now being organised as the formal farewell fixture for his Argentina career spanning more than two decades.
