Former Australia batting great Michael Hussey is set to be seen once again in an important role in the national cricket team’s coaching staff. Cricket Australia has appointed him as consultant coach for the 2027 Ashes series and the ICC ODI World Cup. He has also been assigned responsibility as a T20 adviser for preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup.
Hussey’s new role will begin with the upcoming five-match T20 International series against England. After that, he will also help the Australian team in its preparations for the Test series against New Zealand. Earlier, he had worked with head coach Andrew McDonald for a limited period as a batting consultant. With the new appointment, his role in the team has become more formal and wider than before.
The 51-year-old Hussey played 79 Tests, 185 ODIs and 38 T20 Internationals for Australia. Because of his technical excellence, he is known in the cricket world as “Mr Cricket”. After retiring from international cricket, he also made a mark in coaching. He was the long-serving batting coach of Chennai Super Kings and was also part of the England coaching team that won the T20 World Cup in 2022.
Expressing happiness over the new responsibility, Hussey said he is excited to take on a more formal role with the Australian team in the coming years and contribute to the players’ performances.
