A major commotion broke out outside Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. There are reports of a confrontation between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TMC supporters. After the incident, police reached the spot and tried to pacify both sides. During this time, Abhishek Banerjee also had a heated argument with police officers. The MP sat on a dharna outside his residence for some time.
Abhishek Banerjee alleged on social media platform X that around 2 a.m. on Saturday, BJP supporters pelted stones at his house and also opened fire. He claimed the attack took place in the presence of Kolkata Police. Banerjee said suspicious people had been conducting reconnaissance around his home and office for the past two days. He described the incident as the seventh attack on his life in the past six months.
According to the TMC MP, some workers of his party were injured in the clash. He also said one worker had suffered serious injuries and was sent to hospital for treatment. During the incident, the situation between police and supporters remained tense.
The BJP, meanwhile, has described the allegations as political drama. At present, no independent confirmation from police has emerged regarding the allegations of stone-pelting and firing. After the incident, political allegations and counter-allegations between the two parties have intensified. The investigation into the matter and scrutiny of videos of the sequence of events will be important.
