CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News India: Sanitation workers should receive suitable mechanised equipment, protective kits and training in safe working practices, Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar said at a review meeting on October 22. The discussion with the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis covered occupational safety, rehabilitation and access to welfare measures, according to a ministry release issued through the Press Information Bureau.
Kumar asked for wider awareness of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem, or NAMASTE, so that eligible workers could access its benefits. He said training should help workers improve their skills and carry out sanitation work safely and with dignity.

The minister emphasised that supplying machinery and personal protective equipment was only part of the task. Equipment also needed to be used correctly, maintained regularly and monitored periodically to keep it functional and effective in reducing workplace risks.
He also called for strict implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, and its associated rules. Commission chairperson Bhagwat Prasad Makwana and other members attended the meeting, where Kumar sought continued coordination with the authorities responsible for delivering workers' entitlements.
