Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu created history at the Asian Games 2026 underway in Nagoya, Japan, by winning the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category. Chanu lifted a total of 198kg. She lifted 87kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk. This is Mirabai Chanu’s first Asian Games medal. Earlier, she had finished ninth at the 2014 Incheon Games, while she was fourth at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. She could not take part in the 2018 Asian Games due to injury.
With Chanu’s silver medal, India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal also came to an end. Before this, Karnam Malleswari had won a weightlifting medal for India at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. Since then, Indian weightlifters had not reached the podium at the Asian Games. In the competition, North Korea’s Ri Song-gum won the gold medal with a total lift of 215kg, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana claimed bronze with 191kg. Mirabai’s medal adds to her major international medal collection, which includes her Olympic silver, World Championships and Commonwealth Games achievements.
