In Bollywood, the careers of many stars weaken after a few consecutive flop films, but actor Mithun Chakraborty’s story is different. In a career spanning more than five decades, he worked in several films in one phase, and according to reports, nearly 180 flop films are listed against his name. Despite this, his stardom did not disappear completely, and at the age of 72 he achieved the biggest commercial success of his career.
A journey that began with a National Award: Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in 1976 with Mrinal Sen’s film “Mrigayaa”. For his powerful performance in the film, he received a National Film Award. He later worked in films such as “Shaukeen” and “Ashanti”, but the 1982 film “Disco Dancer” made him popular across the country.
The success of “Disco Dancer” placed Mithun among the major stars of that era. The film’s popularity was not limited to India, and it also received a strong response in Russia.
A phase of flop films in his career: After achieving stardom, Mithun worked in a large number of films. In the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in several films in a single year. Particularly in the 1990s, he worked in many low-budget films, several of which did not succeed at the box office.
According to a report, Mithun acted in more than 270 films during his career of over five decades, and around 180 of them have been described as box-office flops. His last solo-hero hit was “Raavan Raaj”, released in 1995.
The picture changed at 72: After staying away from lead roles for a long time, Mithun also carved out a distinct identity in supporting roles. The biggest commercial milestone of his career came in 2022, when he appeared in Vivek Agnihotri’s film “The Kashmir Files”.
In the film, he played the role of a retired IAS officer. The film performed strongly at the box office and, according to reports, collected around ₹350 crore worldwide. Mithun was 72 years old at the time. The film became one of the highest-grossing films of his career.
Work continued despite the flop figures: Mithun’s story is an example of how box-office failures do not define an artiste’s entire career. Along with films, he also worked on television and remained connected with audiences across different phases.
Even today, Mithun Chakraborty is not identified only as the star of “Disco Dancer”, but as an artiste who retained his place in Hindi cinema despite long ups and downs.
