In Bollywood, the careers of many stars weaken after a run of consecutive flop films, but actor Mithun Chakraborty’s story is very different. In a career spanning more than five decades, he worked in a large number of films, and according to reports, around 180 flops are recorded against his name. Despite this, his stardom did not disappear completely, and at the age of 72 he achieved the biggest commercial success of his career.
Journey began with a National Award
Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in 1976 with Mrinal Sen’s film “Mrigaya”. He won the National Film Award for his outstanding performance in the film. He later worked in films such as “Shaukeen” and “Ashanti”, but the 1982 film “Disco Dancer” made him popular across the country.
The success of “Disco Dancer” placed Mithun among the major stars of that era. The film’s popularity was not limited to India and it also received a tremendous response in Russia.
A phase of flop films in his career
After achieving stardom, Mithun worked in a large number of films. In the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in several films in a single year. Especially in the 1990s, he worked in many low-budget films, several of which did not succeed at the box office.
According to reports, Mithun acted in more than 270 films in his career of over five decades, and around 180 of these are described as box-office flops. His last solo hero hit was “Raavan Raj”, released in 1995.
The picture changed at 72
After staying away from lead roles for a long time, Mithun also created a distinct identity in supporting roles. The biggest commercial milestone of his career came in 2022, when he appeared in Vivek Agnihotri’s film “The Kashmir Files”.
In the film, he played a retired IAS officer. The film performed strongly at the box office and, according to reports, earned around ₹350 crore worldwide. Mithun was 72 years old at the time. The film became one of the highest-grossing films of his career.
Did not stop working despite flop numbers
Mithun’s story is an example of how box-office failures do not define an artist’s entire career. Along with films, he also worked on television and remained connected with audiences across different phases.
Even today, Mithun Chakraborty is recognised not only as the star of “Disco Dancer”, but also as an artist who retained his place in Hindi cinema despite long ups and downs.
