CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani Raises Concern in Assembly Over Delay in Ganganagar PMAY Housing Project
MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani, representing South-West Assembly Constituency 152, Bhopal, raised an attention motion in the Assembly regarding the prolonged delay in the Ganganagar Kotra Project of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), announced in 2016 in Bhopal.
Addressing the House, Sabnani stated that when the country was celebrating 75 years of independence, the Prime Minister had remarked how unfortunate it is that even today, many citizens do not have a proper roof over their heads. This very thought inspired the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) soon after he took office in 2014.
The Ganganagar Kotra project began in 2016, and under the “first come, first served” basis, people had booked their homes. However, even after several years, they have not yet received possession of their houses. The project has already faced a delay of over six years, and there is still no clear timeline on when the houses will be handed over.
Due to this delay, middle-class families are suffering double hardships. For every family, owning a home is a dream. Based on this dream, they applied for housing under the PMAY scheme. However, they now face the burden of paying EMIs to the banks while still living in rented houses, causing severe financial distress.
Almost all beneficiaries have deposited the required funds, yet due to the delay, they are forced to bear both rent and loan repayments. This has led to widespread discontent among registered beneficiaries.
The Ganganagar Residential Project under the Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) component of PMAY (Urban) includes a total of 600 housing units, consisting of:
240 EWS (Economically Weaker Section) units
144 LIG (Low Income Group) units
216 additional LIG units
In response, Minister Rao Uday Pratap Singh has assured that the construction will be completed and homes will be handed over by December 25.
