CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: To connect Old Delhi’s historic identity with modern urban amenities, the Delhi government has prepared a plan to develop the 3.3-kilometre-long Netaji Subhash Marg from Delhi Gate to Kashmiri Gate as a modern heritage corridor. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN) is working on the project. Its objective is to improve traffic management while providing safe and convenient movement for pedestrians and cyclists.

Under the plan, the entire route has been divided into three sections on the basis of road width and traffic conditions. The first section will run from Kashmiri Gate to GPO Chowk, the second from GPO Chowk to Brij Mohan Chowk and the third from Brij Mohan Chowk to Delhi Gate. Different facilities will be developed in these three sections according to the space available.

The corridor proposes wide footpaths, cycle tracks, bus lanes, designated lanes for vehicles, parking spaces and plazas for pedestrians. Modern public toilets will be built on both sides of the road, and existing bus stops will also be upgraded. Designated pedestrian crossings, traffic signals and organised intersections will be provided for safe movement.

Under the project, there is a plan to connect 12 historical sites and green areas located around the route. These include major places such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, St. James’ Church, Lothian Cemetery, Agrasen Park, Subhash Park, Hindi Park, Sunehri Masjid Bagh, Delhi Gate Chowk and Ekta Sthal.

A heritage interpretation park will also be developed near Delhi Gate. A statue, pavilion, green area, seating space and parking facility are proposed in it. Trees and plants, flower beds, green dividers, attractive lighting and architectural elements matching the heritage character will be developed along the entire route.

According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the aim of the project is to expand modern facilities while preserving Old Delhi’s historical and cultural identity. At present, this is a development plan; details of its construction timeline and cost are yet to be announced.
