CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held an important bilateral meeting at Bharat Mandapam on Friday. The two leaders warmly greeted each other before beginning their talks. The meeting took place at a time when India is chairing BRICS and several key issues related to global politics, the economy and security are expected to be discussed at the organisation’s summit.
The Modi-Putin meeting is expected to focus on issues including the India-Russia strategic partnership, trade, energy, defence, investment, technology and regional developments. High-level contacts have continued in recent months to take forward cooperation between the two countries. The two leaders had also met in August during the SCO Summit in Bishkek and reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation.
During the BRICS meeting, issues linked to global tensions, including West Asia and the Ukraine conflict, will also remain important. India is seeking to balance its relations with both Russia and Western countries while maintaining its strategic autonomy.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has also arrived in India to take part in the BRICS summit. China’s foreign ministry has confirmed that preparations are being made for a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Xi Jinping. International attention is therefore focused not only on the Modi-Putin meeting but also on the expected Modi-Xi talks.
