CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Defence cooperation is expected to be a key issue in the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on 11 September. Russia has offered to sell India its fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter jet and proposed possible technical cooperation. The Kremlin has also confirmed that the issue of selling the Su-57 to India is on the agenda for talks between the two leaders.

In addition, discussions may cover equipping the India-Russia joint defence programme, the BrahMos missile, with new capabilities. Russia has expressed its willingness to cooperate in upgrading BrahMos, increasing joint production and strengthening its competitiveness in the international market. Talks are also likely on lighter and advanced variants such as BrahMos-NG. The meeting may also include issues such as the delivery of the final unit of the S-400 air defence system, energy, nuclear cooperation, trade and strategic technology. However, there is no confirmation yet that any new deal related to the Su-57 or BrahMos will be finalised. The actual status of any agreement will become clear only after the talks.
